Day 0

What is the difference between complaining and simply acknowledging reality?

This is a question that I ask myself from time to time. How do I know that what I am saying, or even thinking, is a complaint rather than just a description of what is going on?

It’s not always easy to tell them apart. Especially when you’re trying to navigate a problem. But did you know that you can be grateful for the problems you encounter in life and still deal with them directly?

First of all…if you bottle up your unhappiness with life, that won’t make it better. It will get worse. Your negativity festers inside of you until it explodes, like rotting fruit inside a sealed container.

Denying the realities that you are unhappy with doesn’t serve anybody. It definitely doesn’t serve you.

So before you can determine if you are complaining or not, you first have to face what it is you don’t like. You must express.

Surprise, surprise, the best way to do this ISN’T by posting online. It’s not even that great to vent to your friends and family members. What will likely happen when you do that? The people you share your unhappiness with will cause it to expand, not lessen.

This practice can also weaken the fabric of your relationships. Especially if you consistently complain about one person to another. Eventually, neither of them can trust you.

You know this from lived experience, don’t you? If venting to others is your go-to, you are likely stuck in an addiction loop with negativity by now.

Now is the time to get unhooked.

Check out these steps to getting clear on what is going on in your heart and mind. 3 simple pages to start journaling right away. Just take 5 minutes and start writing. Give your mind a break from all that weight that you are carrying.

You don’t have to do everything right now. In fact, you should make it so that you can revisit your lists as the days go by. What’s important now is to just start.

Focus on the good: that which you can already say “thank you” for. To God, to yourself, to someone else.

Focus on the great: the awesome things you would love to have in the future, or wish you could have had before.

Ground the negative: everything that bothers you about life. Put it down on paper so you can stop carrying it on your mind.

Why? Because you deserve to create a life you love living, rather than be at the mercy of your inner critic all of the time.
