The question that I have for you today:
If you were walking through a portal into a new life tomorrow, what would you want to bring with you in hopes it would get better or grow, and who or what would you happily leave behind in this timeline?
I know I said we might touch on dichotomies, but I don’t think today is the right day for that.
I want you to take an inventory of everything in your life. Everything from the past that has been meaningful to you, whether for a good reason or a not-so-good one. Everything from your current, present-day life, and all of your hopes and dreams for tomorrow. Put them into two categories.
“If I was walking through a portal into a new life, what would I put in a bag labeled “trash”? And what would I put in a suitcase and carry across the threshold into my new life?”
If you feel unappreciated at your job but you keep going every day because you’re there to serve children (Teachers, I’m looking at you on this one), maybe you want to bring your sense of meaning or purpose into the future with the hopes that it comes with much greater reward for you too – without taking away the honor and glory of the whole endeavor, but instead adding to it for everyone involved, including and especially YOU! But “feeling unappreciated, taken for granted, used, abused, walked all over, like you’re trapped in a job that you can’t win in” maybe you want to throw that away. Leave it behind.
You’re allowed to do that in this scenario.
So, take an inventory of everything about your life that comes to mind. People are not trash, but maybe there are relationships you don’t want to continue holding onto as you move up in life.
It’s best to be honest about the people you want to see going forward IF you only want them to come with you on the condition that they change. If you are expecting someone to become the person you want them to become, and you are holding out hope, it’s probably better to leave that relationship in the past. Leave room to dream up the relationship – whether it’s a work connection, family, relatives, friends, a loved one, significant other, etc. – you wish it would become and maybe space for someone else to fill the void that will be left if that person never chooses to become who you keep hoping they will be.
Do you need a long, drawn out explanation or blog post about this one today?
I don’t think you do. And the dichotomies will come up naturally someday, maybe soon. We’ll see.
For now, get busy on your lists! Imagine yourself walking through that portal with your suitcase of “future endeavors” in one hand, and tossing that big ol’ bag of trash into a gigantic dumpster on your way into your new life.
See you tomorrow! 😘
